Libretto For The Film Version Of "The Great Mouse Detective 2: A New Beginning"
"A Month Of Peace"
(Spoken)
OLD MOUSE PORTER: Oh, thank you, Constable McBrusque! You've done me a great service!
CONSTABLE MCBRUSQUE: Don't mention it, Porter. After all, that's what neighbors are for.
A VENDOR: Yes, things are certainly much nicer in Mouse London, now that Professor Ratigan & his minions are gone. Why, they're nicer than they've ever been before!
NEWSPAPER MOUSE: Extra, extra! Mouse London experiences its first month of peace & harmony in decades! Read all about it!
(Music starts playing, & all the characters begin to sing [except where otherwise noted])
MALE MOUSE:
Oh, what joy!
We've had a whole month free of crime & vice!
MALE MOUSE'S WIFE:
Now everyone is kind to one another, sweet, & nice!
MR. ALTOID:
The humans carry on with war & bigotry & such,
But we don't care! The love we feel is really just too much...yes?
MICEFOLK & OTHER CHARACTERS:
This month of peace,
Devoid of grief & tears!
This month of peace,
Free of all worries & fears!
This month of peace,
It's made all good & proper!
May we live & prosper
On this merry month of peace,
This month of peace!
JEMEDIAH FIELDSON:
Now we can live
In harmony all through the day & night!
MOTHER CAULFIELD:
The alley-ways are empty!
Not a criminal in sight!
MR. ALTOID:
But London's streets are not the only thing
That's changed today!
For I now have the freedom to declare...
That I am gay...yes?
MOTHER CAULFIELD (spoken):
What!?
MR. ALTOID:
Although you're free to disagree
With my way of life,
I'm glad that you're not forcing me
To take a female wife, yes?
MOTHER CAULFIELD:
As a Catholic, I must admit,
I don't really approve...
But let's look past our differences!
MR. ALTOID & MOTHER CAULFIELD:
'Cause that's the Christian thing to do...
MR. ALTOID (spoken):
...yes?
MALE MOUSE:
And that's not all that's been changing in our world!
We've also started to be kinder to our dames & girls!
MALE MOUSE'S WIFE:
Female mice are going to school & taking up careers
In occupations once reserved for males...
GROUP OF CHEERLEADERS (spoken):
Let's cheer!
1-2-3-4,
Sexism exists no more!
5-6-7-8,
Girls have power! Ain't that great?
MALE MOUSE:
We don't treat girls like property & different mice like freaks,
And those are changes we accept with open arms & squeaks!
MALE MOUSE'S WIFE:
But, Henry, darling, don't forget to mention one last thing!
CECELIA GREEN, CHUTZPAH THE SQUIRREL, & A RANDOM RAT:
The non-mouse rodents are considered first-class citizens!
(Spoken)
MR. ALTOID: Isn't that just smashing, yes?
RANDOM RAT: Yes, indeed, Mr. Altoid! Now, let's rejoice once more!
MICEFOLK & OTHER CHARACTERS:
This month of peace,
Devoid of grief & tears!
This month of peace,
Free of all worries & fears!
This month of peace,
It's made all good & proper!
May we live & prosper
On this merry...month...of... peace!
This month of peace!
This month of peace!
This month of peace!

"Please Send A Miracle (Olivia's Song)"
OLIVIA:
My smile becomes a frown
As my world crashes down
My sunny skies
Are turning to gray
Don't let the darkness
Conquer my life!
Bring out the sun
And brighten my day
Not long ago,
My father was lost
You led him to me,
But for such a hefty cost
In this dark time,
I offer my plea
Please send a miracle
Answer this prayer
For me...
I wish for blessings
To fill my life
I wish that each day
Was empty of strife
I wish for hope
And happy days
I wish for fortune
And good things to come my way
Help me, dear Lord
Lessen my pain
Save me from darkness
And make my world bright again
In this bleak time,
I have only one plea
Please send a miracle
Answer this prayer
For me...
Please send a miracle
Answer this prayer
For me...

"How Can I Turn Away?"
BASIL (spoken, as the song starts to play underneath him):
Not very long ago,
My life was changed forevermore
I came upon the first mouse
That I'd ever cared for...
(he begins to sing)
That child has warmed my bitter soul
And softened my harsh heart!
Why did she have to leave & make us spend
Our lonely lives apart?
The lively little light is gone
Her frisky flame is snuffed
To wish in vain for her dear company
Is simply not enough!
Oh, how I miss that girl
And her happy, shining face!
How I wish that she would come
And fill this empty space!
But now her world is gone
As her blue skies turn to gray
And her hope is all but lost
How can I turn away?
DR. DAWSON:
You mustn't ever give up hope,
For all is not in vain!
There is a way to dry her tears away
And rid her of her pain!
It only takes a spark of hope,
Just one flame of belief,
For you to help the dear old Flavershams
And end their days of grief
Don't give into despair!
There is something you can do
To sweep away the clouds
And make the sun shine through
Though your mind is plagued with doubt,
Place your trust in what I say
You can surely save the girl!
You can never turn away
BASIL:
But, Dawson, don't you understand
That she's facing bankruptcy?
With each moment, she comes closer
To the brink of poverty!
I've no children of my own
To support my dear old friends
Yet I yearn to ease their suffering
And make their troubles end!
How can I turn away
From a family in need?
I vowed I would not forget the girl,
And I shall keep that creed!
But how can I help them out?
Just what choices should I make?
How am I to bring them aid?
Just what chances should I take?
What's the right thing I can do?
Should I let her stay with me?
Or should I ignore the child
And let her die in poverty?

"Is It Worth It?"
(Spoken)
FIDGET: Wow...Two months since Basil Of Baker Street kicked your butt, & already, you wanna go ahead & reform?
RATIGAN: Hmm, yeah...That's about the size of it.
FIDGET: Uh, OK...But tell me again, Ratigan...why exactly is it that you wanna reform?
RATIGAN: Fidget, you should already know the answer to that question by now.
(Music begins playing, & Ratigan starts to sing)
RATIGAN:
For many dark & gruesome years,
I was the object of others' fears
I brought endless pain & agony
To all of my poor peers
I've been feeling guilt & shame
For all that I've been blamed
How I want to leave my past behind
And clear my poisoned name
I'm so sick & tired of this vice
That I once thought to be so nice!
I'm heck-bent on changing my cruel ways
And warming my heart of ice!
There's no need to live a life of wrong,
And that's why I sing to you this song!
Surely, there's a place of good & just
Where I truly can belong!
(Spoken)
FIDGET: But why are you worrying so much about it?
RATIGAN: You don't understand, Fidget! You just don't understand!
(Ratigan continues singing)
RATIGAN:
Tell me, what is there for me to gain
When I murder, rob, & feign?
All these atrocious acts I've done,
Are they worth the scorn & pain?
Drowning orphans & widows,
Pilfering jewelry & dough,
Heartlessly harming poor rodents like us,
Is it all worth it? NO!
---
"Final Medley"
("HOW CAN I TURN AWAY?" REPRISE)
BASIL:
Oh, darling little girl,
Joy awaits you on this day!
You'll no longer have to feel
Any sadness or dismay
Your rainbow will shine through
All the clouds that were once gray
Sunshine will fill your life
And never go away
("IS IT WORTH IT?" REPRISE)
RATIGAN:
There is much I'm sure that I will gain
When I end my cruel & callous reign
All the kindly deeds I hope to do,
They're all worth my stress & strain
("PLEASE SEND A MIRACLE" REPRISE)
OLIVIA:
Oh, what a bright, beautiful day!
My trials will end,
And things will be all right again
Soon the dark clouds will drift away
Surely, a miracle
Is bound to happen today!
BASIL, RATIGAN, & OLIVIA (singing in a round):
Sweet little child, in just a while
(Citizens dear, have no more fear)
[Now there's no need for my heart to bleed]
Your trials will end & your world will be bright again
(Darkness will leave & your streets will be safe again)
[All of my sorrow, I'm sure I won't feel again]
Suffer no more, child I adore
(Let no more strife conquer your life)
[I'll no longer dwell in a desolate hell]
You'll have your miracle, things will be better for you
(Oh, what a miracle that I changed my life for you)
[This is the miracle God has provided for me!]
---
"Criminals-Turned-Friends"
RATIGAN:
So you say we're dirty rotten scoundrels
Two 'pallin' partners in crime
Well, darling friends, that was then, & this is now
Changes have come with the times
FIDGET:
You've probably never, ever heard this,
But even villains can be cured!
Though it may seem out of whack, it's quite true
That once-corrupt souls can be pure
RATIGAN & FIDGET:
You...see...we're...
Criminals-turned-friends
We kid you not, dear fellows
Criminals-turned-friends
It's as true as Big Ben bellows!
You say a rodent rogue
Is unable to amend
But soon you'll stand corrected
'Cause we're criminals-turned-friends!
RATIGAN:
So you say we're vicious little varmints
With no virtue to our evil name
Well, darling friends, that was then, & this is now
Now we're cleansed of all our sin & shame
FIDGET:
We know you probably don't believe us,
But every word we say is true
All our crimes will be atoned for,
And both our lives will be renewed
RATIGAN & FIDGET:
'Cause...we...are...
Criminals-turned-friends
The truth we tell, old beans
Criminals-turned-friends
It's as true as grass is green!
You say a rodent rogue
Is unable to amend
But soon you'll stand corrected
'Cause we're criminals-turned-friends!
You say a rodent cannot change,
That he'll stay on his evil trend
But now you know such thoughts are strange,
'Cause we're criminals-turned-friends!
And now you stand corrected,
'Cause we're criminals-turned-friends!
Yeah!
---
"I've Changed"
RATIGAN:
Oh, Basil, old friend, don't you see
That foul Napoleon's history!
I've changed! Yes, I've gone & turned
My crime-filled life around
Forget those awful times of yore
That wicked villain's here no more!
I've changed! Yes, I've...
BASIL (spoken):
Changed? Ha!
These ears won't hear that sound!
RATIGAN (spoken):
Now, Basil...
BASIL (singing):
Don't try to tell those horrid lies
And smile beneath those sneaky eyes!
You'll change, yes, the tide will turn
When snails begin to dance!
Rogues never change! They stay the same!
They always play their callous games
And I see no reason to
Give you a second chance!
RATIGAN (spoken):
I'm afraid you're sadly mistaken, my boy...
(singing)
Oh, Basil, chum, just hear me out!
There is no need for you to doubt!
I've changed for the better,
And I'll make you see that fact!
I know that I've lied to you
And said what I knew wasn't true
But times are a-changin',
And this is certainly no act!
BASIL (singing):
There never WAS a reformation!
RATIGAN (spoken):
Why on Earth won't you believe me?
BASIL (singing):
It's all a great big fabrication!
RATIGAN (spoken):
I've truly changed! Can't you see me?
BASIL (singing):
You want to put us in a trap!
RATIGAN (spoken):
I'm not trying to pull any wool!
BASIL (singing):
So don't hand me that stupid schmap!
RATIGAN (spoken):
You're only being a stubborn fool!
BASIL (singing):
You'll never change, my long-time foe,
And don't convince me otherwise!
The day you'll get me to believe you
Is when Felicia flies!
RATIGAN (singing):
But don't you understand that I
Only want to do what's right!
I want to end my days of vice
And fill my days with warmth & light!
BASIL (singing):
Of all the tricks you've ever played,
This one annoys me to no end!
When will you stop trying to show me
That a rodent can amend?
RATIGAN (singing):
Look here, moy dorogoy droog,
I don't like what you're trying to convey!
Kindly stop being so rude
And listen to what I have to say!
Oh, Basil, old friend, don't you see
That foul Napoleon's history!
I've changed! Yes, I swear I've changed!
BASIL (singing):
I find that hard to see!
RATIGAN (singing):
Oh, Basil, dear chum, are you wrong!
That cruel professor's dead & gone!
I'm no longer mean or vicious
And though this may sound fictitious,
I've changed for the better,
And I hope you will agree!
---
"Basil's Lullaby"
BASIL:
Hush-a-bye, mouseling, close your eyes
And listen to my lullaby
Drift away on clouds of white
To Dreamland, love, & sleep for the night
Be at peace, mouseling, have no fear
Nothing can hurt you while I am here
I'll be there all night to stay by your side,
And, sweet little angel, with you, I'll abide
Rest your head & fall asleep
Into a slumber so peaceful & deep
May your rest be oh-so serene
As you hear my gentle voice sing
Hush-a-bye, mouseling, close your eyes
And listen to my lullaby
Drift away on clouds of white
To Dreamland, love, & sleep for the night...

"The World's Greatest Brother Around"
(Spoken)
RATIGAN: My...My friends...Wh...Wh...W-We are about to embark on the most delightful, the most wonderful, the most glorious scheme of my infamous career! A scheme to top all schemes, a scheme that will live in eternal fame! (no reaction from the audience of the karaoke contest) On this oh-too-lovely day, your reviled enemy celebrates his official reformation. (beat) And, with the enthusiastic help of our good friends...That's all you wonderful rodents out there...(some of the audience members begin muttering) It promises to be a day you will never forget. (the clamoring from the audience becomes more excited) My first day in Mouse London as the new-&-improved Ratigan! (at this point, the rodents in the audience, as well as Old Blind Joe & the members of the Goodie Gang begin cheering joyfully) And now, for my entry in the karaoke contest, I would like to reprise a familiar song that some of you may remember from the days of yore...
RATIGAN (singing):
There was once an era of great transgression
And I'm not afraid to make such a confession,
But there was a time when all good & just
Was replaced in my heart by ill will & bloodlust
But now, as you see, things have changed!
I'm no longer vile & deranged!
I'm pleased to announce that I have denounced
The horrible lifestyle I had,
And you'll be delighted, amazed, & excited
To know that I'm no longer bad!
AUDIENCE MEMBERS (singing in unison):
What a change that has happened!
We can start living without any fear!
BARTHOLOMEW:
Though, to be honest, I miss me beer...
AUDIENCE MEMBERS:
To Ratigan,
To Ratigan...
The best guy in town!
Oh, Ratigan,
Oh, Ratigan...
The truth of his words is abound!
(Spoken)
RATIGAN: Thank you, thank you all very much...But you must realize that I wasn't always the monster I used to be. I once had kindness & love in my heart, a long time ago...but the candle of caring that burned was quickly stamped out by the feet of that miserable scoundrel, Mouses Fiennes!
(The audience members react in horror. The thugs say nothing in response. The Goodie Gang & Old Blind Joe, however, start booing & reacting angrily.)
BILL, RED, SNAKES, MIRIAM, OLGA, & OLD BLIND JOE: BOO!
BILL: I hate you, Mouses Fiennes!
RED: Go to heck!
RATIGAN: For many long & terrible years, that callous, incorrigible monster manipulated me into becoming an agent of the devil! He made me who I used to be! (begins to sob & cry) And only now, have I realized what innocence is left of the little boy Mouses transformed into a heartless villain--the very rodent standing before you!
AUDIENCE MEMBERS: Aaaawwww...
BARTHOLOMEW: (crying noisily)
RATIGAN: But fear not, my fellow Londoners. I assure you that no one, not even Mouses, will return my soul to its troubled state! Now you can live in safety without any reason to be afraid--for the Napoleon Of Crime has abdicated his evil throne!
(Singing continues)
AUDIENCE MEMBERS (singing in unison):
Oh, Ratigan,
Oh, Ratigan...
He's great, & that's that!
To Ratigan,
To Ratigan...
BARTHOLOMEW:
To Ratigan, the world's greatest mouse! (belches)
(Spoken)
RATIGAN: What was THAT?! What did you call me?
RED: Oh, oh, he didn't mean it, Professor...
BILL: I-I-It was just a slip of the tongue!
RATIGAN: I AM NOT A MOUSE! And may I add that I'm NOT a professor, either!
SNAKES: 'Course you're not. You're a rat!
RED: Yeah, that's right. Right! A rat!
BILL: Yeah...(stutters for a couple of seconds) A CUDDLY rat!
RATIGAN: SILENCE, YOU FOOLS! (beat) (lets out a sigh) Oh, my dear Bartholomew...I'm afraid that you've gone & upset me. (another beat) And do you know what happens...when someone upsets me?
(Bartholomew gulps.)
BARTHOLOMEW (singing):
Oh, Ratigan,
Oh, Ratigan,
You're the guy, & that's that...
(spoken)
Oh, cheese-sticks!
(singing again)
To Ratigan,
To Ratigan,
To Ratigan, the world's greatest...
(Beat. Ratigan lets out a fearsome growl, & Bartholomew squeals like a little girl. Then, after several seconds, Ratigan chuckles nervously.)
(Spoken)
RATIGAN: I trust there will be no further interruptions from Mr. Favell...(clears his throat) And now, as you were singing?
(Singing continues)
AUDIENCE MEMBERS (singing in unison):
He's not violent or vicious!
He curbs his wrath with a growl & then leaves!
He said he's reformed, & now we believe!
Oh, Ratigan,
Oh, Ratigan,
His change is profound!
To Ratigan,
To Ratigan,
The world's greatest brother around!

"The Master Of Evil"
(Spoken)
SNOTTY SAM: So....what are we gonna do about this, boss?
MOUSES: What any loyal thugs would do for their fallen leader....take him back to the hideout & corrupt him, of course! And when we make Ratigan evil again, the Baker Street Family won't be able to stop us this time! The prophecy from long ago is destined to soon come true! The League Of Villains shall throw Mouse London into an unholy reign of terror & chaos! And that's just how I like it!
(Music begins playing, & Mouses starts to sing)
MOUSES:
I am the master of evil!
I rule all thugs mean & tough!
I craft the crimes that get put in the Times
Of crime, I just can't get enough!
I am a criminal genius!
My wile & my style make me proud!
There is no doubt what they shout about me...
BARTHOLOMEW (spoken):
Goodness, you sing so loud!
(Beat) [1]
MOUSES (singing):
I am the master of evil,
But it wasn't always that way
For 14 years, there was a crim'nal so dear...
Oh, how I pine for those days!
On a cold winter's night, not too long ago,
I was strolling in the streets
It started to snow as I headed for home...
Then I heard somebody weep
I saw a bundle with a baby enfolded
It was a young rat, all alone in the coldness
I picked him up, & held him so sweetly
And I took the babe home with me
(Spoken)
MOUSES: And do you know who that boy grew up to be?
BARTHOLOMEW: Uh...me?
MOUSES: No, you idiot! Ratigan!
BARTHOLOMEW: Oh, right...(titters sheepishly)
(Singing continues)
MOUSES:
For 17 years, I nurtured the infant
For the day he would become a delinquent!
I molded him into the rogue I planned for him to be...
My boy was the world's greatest criminal brain,
The fabulous felon who'd seek wicked fame!
But on the night he was supposed to be king,
He had to go & betray me! A shame...
Oh, Ratigan, how could you do this?
You once lived a life of sweet, blissful malice,
But you gave it all up to begin a new life...
You became good! Such a pity!
But that will soon change, don't you worry,
For I'll take you back, & we'll hurry
To make you the villain you're destined to be,
And soon, we shall poison the city...
THUGS (singing in unison):
With crime!
MOUSES (spoken):
Hurrah!
THUGS (singing in unison):
This time...
MOUSES (spoken):
Huzzah!
MOUSES & THUGS (singing in unison):
There won't be a reformation!
Let's say
Hooray
For the day of your defamation!
MOUSES:
Now, my thugs, listen up!
THUGS (singing in unison):
What's the news, master dear?
MOUSES:
There's a last little matter
That I must make clear...
Being the master of evil,
I must do this deed with great caution,
Lest there be a flaw in my fabulous felony...
THUGS (singing in unison):
Oh, what a very sad notion!
MOUSES:
But that will not happen, will it, boys?
SNOTTY SAM, GUNSMOKE GARY, & WALKER (spoken, in unison):
Naye, guv'ner!
MOUSES:
We'll c'rrupt him again, won't we, boys?
JAYWALK JAMES, TERRY, & THOMAS (spoken, in unison):
Aye, guv'ner!
MOUSES:
Chaos will erupt
When our friend is corrupt!
THUGS (singing in unison):
Amen to that, Mouses Fiennes!
(Spoken)
PEEWEE PETE: But, Mouses, just how are we gonna bring Ratigan over to the hideout?
WALKER: And how are we gonna get rid of the Baker Street Family, so they don't muck up our plans?
JAYWALK JAMES: Should we bring Fidget, too, or do you just want Ratigan?
EUNICE: How can we make sure the police & mouse detectives don't try to track us down?
SHELLINGTON BATLY: I think I may be able to assist you in that matter, Mouses!
(Clamoring & chattering from the thugs.)
MOUSES: Please, my good minions, don't start peppering me with questions until we lay out a basic plan! The sketch of the big picture must come first, & then, the details follow after that! Understood?
THUGS (in unison): Yes, Mouses....
MOUSES: Good! I'm glad you understand the procedure we must take in order for this plan to work efficiently!
AGENT 001: I think you mean "effectively", Mouses.
MOUSES: Yes, in order for it to work effectively, right! (chuckles nervously, then clears his throat) But, anyway...irregardless...
AGENT 001: You realize that's not the correct term for "regardless", right, Mouses? If you want your thugs to take you seriously, don't start contradicting yourself with that other word--which isn't even a word, really!
(Beat)
MOUSES: Agent 001...when I want you to give me a grammatical lecture, I'll kindly ask for one, thank you! (another beat) Well, regardless, irregardless, whatever...The point is, my dear thugs & minions, that I sincerely appreciate your efforts to be patient & wait until we come with a good basic plan for Operation: Corruption!
(Applause & cheers from the thugs.)
(Singing continues)
MOUSES:
Ratigan, take one last look at your life...
All in good time, your heart shall be black,
For you belong to the side of evil,
And I'll make sure you come back!
THUGS (singing in unison):
That's a fact!
Oh, he is the master of evil,
The nastiest rodent around!
He has a hard heart, & there's no doubt about it
That he's the worst felon in town!
MOUSES (spoken):
Of course!
THUGS (singing in unison):
He is a criminal genius,
The meanest one you'll ever see!
MOUSES (spoken):
Naturally!
THUGS (singing in unison):
He's crafty, & cunning, & cruel as can be!
MOUSES (spoken):
I'm the vilest villain in history!
THUGS (singing in unison):
Who is the bloke that we love the most?
His name is Mouses Fiennes!
MOUSES (singing to the tune of the chorus of "The World's Greatest Criminal Mind"):
My dear pupil, don't worry...
When the day comes when you're with us once more,
There's much planned for you that lies in store!
Oh, Ratigan,
Oh, Ratigan,
On that blessed day,
My Ratigan,
My Ratigan,
We'll show you that crime really pays!
[1] There is an additional part with dialogue here, but that won't be put in the soundtrack version of the song.

"Rule Britannia (Rodential Version)"
When British history first began
'Mong rolling hills & verdant plains,
This was the charter of the land,
And all its micefolk sung this strain
Rule, Britannia, home of the free & brave
Rodents never, never, ever shall be slaves!
The other nations, blessed like thee,
Shall ne'er to brutes or bigots fall,
And thou shalt flourish affably
As friend & ally of them all
Rule, Britannia, home of the free & brave
Rodents never, never, ever shall be slaves!
Still more majestic shalt thou rise,
Assisted by each foreign stroke
No tears shall flow from natives' eyes,
And we'll be good to all micefolk
Rule, Britannia, home of the free & brave
Rodents never, never, ever shall be slaves!
No racist tyrant e'er shall tame
Any attempts to bring them down,
But let them fall in woe & shame,
So there'll be joy in every town!
Rule, Britannia, home of the free & brave
Rodents never, never, ever shall be slaves!
To all belongs the right to thrive
In peace & love & harmony,
So keep the rights of mouse alive
In every rodential country!
Rule, Britannia, home of the free & brave
Rodents never, never, ever shall be slaves!
All rodentkind, pure & unstained,
Shall dance with joy, free from control
No one is fit to rule or reign
But mousely hearts & caring souls
Rule, Britannia, home of the free & brave
Rodents never, never, ever shall be slaves!

"I've Never Felt This Way Before"
VICTORIA:
Whisked from my cradle to be raised in a heckhole,
You'd think that a young child like me couldn't subsist...
But though I did manage to flee & find freedom,
I never became blessed with true happiness...
All through the course of my meager existence,
I wondered sometimes if the Lord cared for me...
I lived such a terrible life filled with sorrow,
Yet why God should bring blessings now, I don't see...
I am doomed to be alone, it's true...
I'm not meant to share a life with you...
There's no one who can fill this empty space...
Yet I wish there was a way for me to fill my life with grace!
I want to start anew,
But, oh, what can I do?
My tender heart grows sore...
I've never felt this way before...
BASIL:
Raised in a city that was teeming with crim'nals
I knew that I had to grow up, so one day,
I'd learn from the Master & gain all the knowledge
That I'd need to clean up this vice-tainted world...
In spite of the honors & medals they gave me
As thanks for the service I'd done all these years,
I never felt whole, & sometimes, on dark evenings,
I'd fail in attempts to fight back lonely tears...
Before long, I first began to feel
The emotions that I once concealed,
And now that I've gotten to know you,
I have found the very woman to make all my dreams come true!
Oh, don't you understand
What passions seize this man?
My young heart, how it soars...
I've never felt this way before!
My dear sweet, you fill me with delight...
VICTORIA:
You turn my darkness into light...
BASIL (singing simultaneously with Victoria):
I swear I'll never leave your side!
VICTORIA (singing simultaneously with Basil):
And so, with you, I shall abide!
BASIL & VICTORIA (singing in unison):
I'll always be there for you,
And you'll be there for me, too...
VICTORIA:
I know that it's hard to face the truth,
But my life is empty without you
BASIL:
Darling, please say you'll remain with me!
VICTORIA:
In the warmth of your embrace is
where I really want to be!
BASIL & VICTORIA (singing in unison):
Whatever we go through,
I always will love you...
My heart, oh, how it soars!
I've never felt this way before...

"The World Doesn't Understand You"
MELISSA MOUSECHESTER:
You look at the rodents around you
They stare at you with puzzled gazes
And yet, you don't quite understand
Why they sport such inquisitive faces
When they reach out a paw to touch you,
You feel pain & you back away
You don't understand why they're startled
To be seeing you in such dismay
You feel puzzled by riddles & sayings
Whose meanings tend to flee your brain,
And you don't comprehend why they understand
Funny things that are never explained
But don't be embarrassed or shameful!
There's no need to be forlorn or blue
You may think that the world's a big mystery,
But the world doesn't understand you

"Finally Free"
(Spoken)
MIRIAM: (sighs) If only Mouses wasn't our boss!
MANCHESTER MAURICE: Indeed, Miriam, indeed.
OLD BLIND JOE: I hear ya.
OLGA: Da, da.
BARTHOLOMEW: Think of all the things we'd do if Mouses wasn't around!
MANCHESTER MAURICE: I'm willing to bet you my last five pounds that if we didn't have Mouses, we could do anything we wanted! Anything! That means...drink all the sparkling grape soda we wanted!
BARTHOLOMEW: And eat all the fish & chips we could eat...& go to the park, & play in the sunshine, & pick pretty flowers...& see all the lovely London sights...& swim in the terribly filthy rivers without a bloomin' care...
MIRIAM: ...& dance the night away! Perhaps do a little shopping, while we're at it!
MANCHESTER MAURICE: And if we didn't have Mouses...
BARTHOLOMEW: Are you guys thinking...what I'm thinking?
(Music starts playing, & all the characters begin to sing [except where otherwise noted])
BARTHOLOMEW:
If we didn't have Mouses,
Our lives would be oh-too grand...
We could all do what we wanted to!
Without Mouses, we'd have the upper hand!
MANCHESTER MAURICE:
If we didn't have Mouses,
Think of all the things we'd do...
We wouldn't need leave to do what we please!
Without Mouses, life would be so jolly good!
MIRIAM:
Without Mouses, I'd be free to roam the city!
I could spend all day & night out on the town!
In my nicest outfit, I'd sure look real pretty
While my darlin' Bart took me to dance around!
OLD BLIND JOE:
And if we didn't have Mouses,
Our gray skies would turn to blue!
All the sights he wouldn't let us see,
Our eyes will someday view!
BARTHOLOMEW, MANCHESTER MAURICE, MIRIAM, OLD BLIND JOE, BILL, RED, SNAKES, & OLGA (singing in unison):
Without Mouses around,
It's here we wouldn't have to be!
Without Mouses, we could finally be free!
BILL:
If we didn't have Mouses,
There'd be no more cause to grieve!
Crime would be fought! Lessons would be taught
To all murderers & vandalists & thieves!
RED:
If we didn't have Mouses,
My life would be darn easy!
I'd not have to deal with attempts to conceal
My crude, coarse, & unrefined vocabulary!
(Spoken)
BILL: Red!
RED: Sorry, Bill!
OLGA:
Without Mouses, I'd be free to be unbridled
From the burden of serving as his masseuse!
MIRIAM (spoken):
Tell 'em, Olga!
OLGA:
To all nasty men, I say to you, "Eat earthworms!"
"I've a right to live precisely as I choose!"
SNAKES:
And if we didn't have Mouses,
Everyone would live in peace!
Earth would be nothing but paradise,
Where all bad things would cease!
BARTHOLOMEW, MANCHESTER MAURICE, MIRIAM, OLD BLIND JOE, BILL, RED, SNAKES, & OLGA (singing in unison):
Without Mouses around,
We'd live in total ecstasy!
Without Mouses, we could finally be free!
BARTHOLOMEW:
If we didn't have Mouses, we could party the night away,
Sleep in as late as we wanted to, & then, get up & play!
MANCHESTER MAURICE:
If we didn't have Mouses, life would be as sweet as pie!
(Spoken)
OLGA: Yes, & without fuss!
RED: I'd cuss...
SNAKES: Do hush!
OLD BLIND JOE:
I'd get a new glass eye!
BILL:
If we didn't have Mouses, we could commit noble deeds,
Perform random acts of kindness, & bring help to those in need!
SNAKES:
If we didn't have Mouses, I could live in privacy,
Without worrying about him peeking in my diary!
MIRIAM:
Without Mouses, I could stroll in the bright sunshine
In the company of good ladies & gents!
Without Mouses, I'd be free to have some fun time!
Bart & I could nurture our loving romance!
BARTHOLOMEW (spoken):
Aw, Mimsy!
RED:
If we didn't have Mouses,
We'd be o'er the flippin' moon!
BILL:
Red, I couldn't have said it better!
OLD BLIND JOE:
That would be a dream come true!
OLGA:
And if Mouses wasn't here,
I'd say the things I've dreamed to say!
BARTHOLOMEW:
Wish we didn't have Mouses...
BARTHOLOMEW, MANCHESTER MAURICE, MIRIAM, OLD BLIND JOE, BILL, RED, SNAKES, & OLGA (singing in unison):
...'cause that would just make our day!
If...we...didn't have Mouses,
We'd all be so full of glee!
If he weren't around to make our smiles frowns,
We'd be the happiest blokes in history!
'Cause if we didn't have Mouses,
All the heavenly hosts would sing
Of the day a wicked tyrant
Fell from his status as king!
Without Mouses around,
The world would live in harmony!
Without Mouses, we could finally be free!
Without Mouses around,
Life sure would be a cup of tea!
Without Mouses, we could finally...be...free!!!

"Please Send A Miracle (Reprise)"
OLIVIA:
My smile becomes a frown
As my world crashes down
My sunny skies
Are turning to gray
How could You let this
Happen to me?
Why did You inflict
This great tragedy?
Not long ago,
Things were OK
Darkness was gone,
And the skies were no longer gray
Now the storm-clouds
Are pouring down rain
Please send a miracle
And make things all right again...

"Happy Ending After All"
[Verse 1]
When the weight of the world falls on you
And you're feeling down & blue,
Just keep your head up towards the skies
And watch the sun shine through
When you follow your heart song,
You can make your dreams come true
Crack a smile & chase that rainbow
No one's stopping you
[Bridge To Chorus]
Don't let bad things get to you,
For misery never lasts
Look towards the future
And let go of the past...
[Chorus]
Whenever times are dreary
And things are going wrong,
Just keep hope in your heart
And they won't be bad for long
When the story of your life is sad
And your tears start to fall,
Just know that this tale will have
A happy ending after all
[Verse 2]
Bad things will sometimes happen
There are times for us to cry
But that doesn't mean that we should let
The hope inside us die
There is light in every darkness
And a balm for every sore,
So take faith in optimism
And the good things that are in store
[Bridge To Chorus]
Don't let bad things get to you,
For misery never lasts
Look towards the future
And let go of the past...
[Chorus]
Whenever times are dreary
And things are going wrong,
Just keep hope in your heart
And they won't be bad for long
When the story of your life is sad
And your tears start to fall,
Just know that this tale will have
A happy ending after all
[Instrumental break]
[Bridge To Chorus]
Don't let bad things get to you,
For misery never lasts
Look towards the future
And let go of the past...
[Chorus]
Whenever times are dreary
And things are going wrong,
Just keep hope in your heart
And they won't be bad for long
When the story of your life is sad
And your tears start to fall,
Just know that this tale will have
A happy ending after all
Happy ending after all...

"Family"
(CHORUS)
Parents & siblings make everyone glad
And I'm sure you will agree
That there's no better company
Than your dear family
Some families are big, & some are small
Some members are short, while others are tall
But no matter what their size may be,
They're all part of a family
Some families have two parents, some families have one
And sometimes a family will even have none
But no matter who your parents may be,
They're all part of your family
Some families have daughters, some families have sons
Some will have many kids, some have just one
But whether you have seven siblings or three,
They're all part of your family
Some families are quiet, some families are loud
Sometimes they'll lie down & look at the clouds
But no matter what your family will do,
Their love for you is strong & true...
(CHORUS) (2x)

"I'll Always Be There For You"
BARRIE:
When you're lost in the darkest of nights
And you don't know where to go,
Just take my hand, my darling friend,
And I will lead you home
SARAH:
When you cannot see the light
And you're standing in the rain,
Come with me into shelter
And I'll heal your inner pain
BARRIE:
Let me lead you down the trail
To a land where all is bright!
See the sunshine pouring in,
And dry your tears of fright
SARAH:
And whenever you are sad
And you're full of gloom,
I'll stay right by you
I'll always be there for you...
Whenever you're afraid
And consumed with fear,
There's no need to worry,
For I will dry your tears
BARRIE:
If you're ever in trouble
And you need a helping hand,
Call my name, I'll be there
To try & help you stand
SARAH:
Don't be down or dreary,
For bad times don't last long!
If you're ever weary,
I will come & make you strong
BARRIE:
And when the storm is over
And the sun shines through,
I'll never leave you
I'll always be there for you...
(Instrumental break)
BARRIE:
Whenever you face danger,
I'll stand right by your side
I'll protect you, friend,
And I'll keep close by & by
SARAH:
Whenever you are lonely
And there's no one at your side,
I'll be there to comfort you,
And with you, I'll abide
BARRIE:
I know I'm not alone,
As long as I have you...
SARAH:
I'll never leave you...
BARRIE:
I'll stay right by you...
BOTH:
I'll always be there for you...
(End song)

"Goodbye So Soon" (GMD 2 Version)
Goodbye so soon,
And isn't it a shame?
We know by now that time knows how to fly
So here's goodbye so soon
We'll go our separate ways
With time so short, I'll say so long
And go...
So soon...
Goodbye!
You followed me,
I followed you
We were like each others' shadows for a while
Now, we all see
This film is through,
So although it hurts,
I'll try to smile
As...we...say
Goodbye so soon,
And isn't it a shame?
We know by now that time knows how to fly
So here's goodbye so soon
We'll go our separate ways
With time so short, I'll say so long
And go...
So soon...
Goodbye!
